Giving effect to the grace of God 01/11/09
He wants us to be light and salt and so shine our light before that people:  His name must be glorified.  In Philippians 2:15 we find the very same thought:  we live in a crooked and depraved generation and here we need to have our lights shine like stars in the universe, holding out the Word of life. ...

Because we have comfort, encouragement, fellowship and compassion18/10/09
The Apostle is clear about the work of the Holy Spirit: He testifies with our sprit that we are children of God, and if children, then co‐heirs with Christ Jesus. We need to keep this mind when it seems that on this earth we face a sure loss of what others might think of some worth. The Spirit lives in us, He guides us, and we are the temples of the Spirit. But more than that: Jesus Christ Himself declared: ...

A Well‐functioning body 11/10/09
There is a joy in praying. Not only do we have the grace to talk to the Father of our
Redeemer who made the heavens and the earth, we also have the joy of being involved in your work on earth. We may pray for those who need You and be with them in their need. Or we might bring before You those who grieve, or have joy, and grieve with them and rejoice with them. We may be involved in the work of your church right across this world. ...

Prophets ain’t prophets 04/10/09
False teachers have been there all the time, and will be there till the return of Christ. In most cases these false teachers are, as 2Pet 2:1 puts it, “among the people”. It was like this from the earliest days. Heresy is something the church of the Lord Jesus Christ will always have to contend with. At no stage in the history of the church, even the future of the church, will we not have false teachers. As a matter of fact, these false teachers might proliferate the closer we are to the return of Christ. ...

Disobedient hesitation 27/09/09
It is so that the conflict of this world, born in the sinfulness of men; the poverty in the world, partly because of the greediness and the deplorable way Christian stewardship is conducted; the injustice of this world, rooted in the inborn unrighteousness of man; the hunger, because of oppressive governments, national pride, neglect in the families, abuse of mercy efforts, and laziness of man, injustice to reward the faithful labourer for his input, are all things which concerns us in our Christian calling. To these things we cannot turn a blind eye!. ...

Hesitant obedience 20/09/09Hesitant obedience 3 Mp3
The opening book of the Bible contains two chapters to tell and warn of God’s hatred of sin, his judgement of it and the catastrophic consequences of living in the world and loving it. The first is the event of the Flood. Noah was a righteous man who loved God and did what God commanded him. With extreme patience he built the ark with every hammer blow being a sermon to those around him to repent. They did, and God destroyed the world in that massive flood. Why? Because his holiness and justice demanded it!. ..

Knowing God better 13 /09/09Knowing God better 3 Mp3
Any human being loves to be associated with important, influential and rich people.  It is our nature.  Anyone who has won a lot of money will tell you how many “friends” they gained in the wake of their fortune.
People who know certain celebrities can endlessly rave about that fact, especially when that person’s face is screened on TV. ...

A Living Memorial of God’s Redemption 06 /09/09A Living Memorial of God’s Redemption 3 Mp3
Joshua made it clear to them that there should be a distance between them and the ark. The ark was a symbol of God’s presence with them. The ark would go ahead of them, as a symbol of God going ahead of them, showing them the way. And as a matter of fact, when the feet of the priests carrying the ark touched the water of the Jordan, the Bible says, the water stopped flowing. God ahead of his people! What a wonderful and assuring grace this is. When God is ahead of us, noting can stand in our way. ...

The Day the Lord listened to a man 30 /08/09The Day the Lord listened to a man 3 Mp3
Another great problem with many Christians today is the pietistic idea that the promised land, as we read about it in the Old Testament, is the promised land of heaven. So they don’t want to be a member of the army of Jesus Christ here on earth. To them, to be saved, is to be plucked out of this world with all its responsibilities, and to wait until the day they may enter the Promised Land of heaven. Everything on earth is of no significance. Of being part of the church militant is to them of no consequence; they only want to be part of the church triumphant, gathered around the throne of God singing his praises. ...

Do not give up doing good - (3) 23 /08/09Do not give up doing good 3 Mp3
The problem is just that we think eternity will never catch up with us; we might even think that God is not serious about the way we live and will somehow come to our aid just before we die and have to give account before his judgement throne. There is another problem, so easily overlooked: we might think that salvation without good works which follow in the sanctified life of the believer will count for nothing and that sowing in the field of God’s church is unnecessary; instead we use the seed given to us to sow in the field of our own ambitions to satisfy our needs until the day of the Lord’s return. ...

Do not give up doing good - (2) 16 /08/09Do not give up doing good 3 Mp3
The older I grow, the more I am convinced that real practical holiness does not receive the attention it deserves, and that there is a most painfully low standard of living among many high professors of religion in the land... Sensational and exciting addresses by strange preachers or by women, loud singing, hot rooms, crowded tents, the constant sight of strong semi-religious feeling in the faces of all around you for several days, late hours, long protracted meetings, public profession of experience ...

Do not give up doing good - (1) 02 /08/09Do not give up doing good 1 Mp3
There is something very amazing about grace.  In the life of Ahab, the godless king of Israel, God kept knocking on the door of his life.  He hardened his heart for the call of the Gospel through the prophets, rejected the grace of the gracious God, but in the end had to enter eternity without God.  God’s mercy, justice and righteousness cannot be altered: ...

When being good is not good enough 26/07/09When being good is not good enough Mp3
... The young rich ruler, a man who ostensibly had it all, came up to Jesus and asked what he should do in order to be saved.  Jesus told him to go away, sell all his things and give it to the poor, and then come and follow Jesus.  Although this man had followed the Law in all its detail since his youth, he walked away from the Saviour, lost for all eternity.  He was, in his own eyes, too good to be saved. ...

Saved, yet so as through fire 19/07/09Saved, yet so as through fire Mp3
... He who had seen and tasted the fruit of God’s blessing upon the obedience of his father, why would he turn away from it to become known as the most evil king of Israel? He is actually described as more rebellious and worse than the kings who reigned in Israel before the Israelites got there. ...

A sinner in the hands of a merciful and just God 05/07/09A sinner in the hands of a merciful and just God Mp3
... Then God sent Elijah to Ahab.  God just wanted to see his purposed worked out.  And Elijah was willing to be there when God wanted him. He entered into the room where Elijah sat in anger and depression after the death of Nabot whose vineyard he took through the hands of the godless Jezebel. ...

Biblical Eldership, The flock under attack 28/06/09The flock under attack Mp3
... There were about 300 elders and ministers assembled, coming from right across the known Christian world. They had a debate, which on the surface, might appear to have all the signs of your typical debate at assemblies. It hinged on the letter “i”. Should this letter be in the word, or should it be left out of the word. ...

Living under a new Master’s rule 07/06/09Living under a new Master’s rule Mp3
We are alive to God in Christ Jesus. It expresses the believer’s spiritual and eternal position in his identification with Christ. This verse sums up the whole of the first section of this chapter, and serves as an argument against the preposterous idea of continuing in sin. ...

United with Christ Jesus 31/05/09United with Christ Jesus Mp3
There are churches today that teach that salvation is not by grace alone, it’s by grace, plus our works, and justification is not by faith alone, it’s by faith, plus works.  If the Bible were teaching that justification was by faith plus works, nobody could have said to Paul, ...

This far the Lord has helped us 17/05/09This far the Lord has helped us Mp3
Samuel was fully aware of Israel’s rebellion.  They traded the Living God who created the heavens and the earth for lifeless gods. They became like the nations around them.  They acted as if they were not the people rescued by God to be his holy possession. ...

Imputed righteousness 10/05/09Imputed righteousness Mp3
David’s case was hopeless. There was nothing he could do but cast himself on God’s mercy. And this is what David did by faith—and thus God forgave his transgressions, covered his sin, and did not count, or impute, his sins against him. ...

Called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ 03/05/09Called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ Mp3
I agree with many other reformed preachers of the Gospel that Gospel preaching today is in serious trouble. Earnest calls from many sources come to once again return to expositional Bible preaching. ...

What if Christ has not risen 26/04/09What if Christ has not risen Mp3
Corinth was a seaman’s paradise and a moral cesspool. Divorce was rampant. Prostitution plagued the streets, and the moral air was polluted with the luring aroma of sin. The moral depravity of this city most vividly reflects the spiritual need of Corinth. ...

The Risen Christ 19/04/09 The Risen Christ Mp3

Christ is risen 12/04/09 Christ is risen Mp3
What I have tried to tell you in the story above is but a fraction of the Gospel, but it is nonetheless the heart of the Gospel:  We need atonement before God; only a life can make atonement; only the best will do to satisfy the righteousness of God and his anger upon sin;...

like His brothers in every way 10/04/09 like His brothers in every way Mp3
But above all, we are cast out of the saving presence and care of our Father.  We are not by birth part of his family anymore; by birth we are evil, enemies of God, not deserving of grace.  We hate God and our fellow men. ...

The reason and effect of the Cross of Christ 05/04/09 Is it better that one man die Mp3

The Cross of Jesus Christ 29/03/09 The Cross of Jesus Christ Mp3
Christ redeemed us from the Law in two ways:  He paid the price of our disobedience to the law, and therefore our rebellion against the righteousness of God, but He also meet the righteousness of God by living in accordance with the Law. ...

Is it better that one man die? 22/03/09 Is it better that one man die Mp3
In their unbelief and rebellion against Jesus they wanted to hang on to the very things they would lose if they rejected Jesus.  Generations of the Old Testament did the same:  true prophets of God were rejected, flogged, jailed and even killed in an effort to maintain what they thought was good. ...

The Cup of the Lord 29/02/09 The Cup of the Lord Mp3
Not only is the content of the cup, which points to the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, important to remember when we celebrate the sacrament.  The vessel of the cup has an important message too.  And maybe through the use of the small cups as we do it in the Presbyterian Church, we do not always keep in mind this important symbolic message. ...

Why does your Master eat with sinners? 22/02/09 Why does your Master eat with sinners Mp3

Why God? 15/02/09 Why God Mp3

Where the Church gone? 08/02/09 Where the Church gone MP3
...Last week we asked the question, “Where has God gone?”  No one has ever seen God, but God chose to reveal Himself in different ways in the past.  To his Old Testament people God revealed Himself in the pillar of cloud and fire as He made known to his people his glory.  Through this manifestation of Himself, God showed Himself as the Great I AM, the One who is present, without Whom the very existence of his people is doomed. ...

Where has God gone? 01/02/09 Where has God gone MP3

Wait upon the Lord 25/01/09 Wait upon the LordMP3
...I think there must be a connection between being patient and being a patient. A patient in hospital must wait: for food, drink, nursing, the visit of the doctor; some even have to wait to be moved. They can get upset about this, but it doesn’t really help. And when they make peace with their circumstances, they learn from it. ...

Show me your ways 18/01/09 Show me your ways MP3
...My brother and sister, do you know the pain of disappointment?  Especially when you had all the good intentions of following the Lord with greater fervour, greater service and holiness; with a strong desire to seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness – only to fall once again, only to find yourself once again on your knees in pain before God.  There was no real victory over sin, there was no progress.  I have once again disappointed God and am disappointed in myself! ...

Forfeited Grace 11/01/09 Forfeited Grace MP3
...My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, how many times have you heard the Gospel of forgiveness in the Lord Jesus Christ?  Do you perhaps come from a family where the Lord is served by godly parents or grandparents?  You have seen the grace of God at work all around you; you heard about it; you see the effects of grace changing the lives of people as they become redeemed children of God. But what about you?  Have you responded to it? ...

A Season of Grace 04/01/09 A Season of Grace MP3
...I remember those times when I was doing the wrong thing with my brothers, and in many cases dad caught us out red-handedly.  What was my first reaction?  “Yes, but he …” It was almost as if I might fare better if someone else could be more guilty.  This exactly what our Lord wants to teach us today:  all are guilty before and we need to face up to the fact that we are going to give account to God, everyone for himself. ...
